While working in my father’s butcher shop for most of my young adult life might have made me pre-disposed to painting meat, it took permission from a number of artists to actually get me thinking about it. These artists, who include Rembrandt, Goya, van Gogh, Picasso, Soutine, and Bacon, all have explored meat as subject. Even with all this influence, it wasn’t until I visited a retrospective of Wayne Thiebaud’s work that it sounded like a good idea. Thiebaud is known for his impasto paintings of bakery, deli, and candy display cases that reflected both a Pop and Traditional sentimentality. Even though meat wasn’t his primary subject matter, the work showed me what such a painting could look like.
I have been creating meat-related work for over ten years now, and it continues to hold my interest. What started as a semi-ironic tribute to my past became tongue in cheek “meat propaganda” pieces that combined attributes of design and advertising with traditional still-life. Now it seems I have come full-circle, once again treating meat as an object of aesthetic consideration within wider cultural implications.

The following series features hybrid images of steaks and chops juxtaposed with Cold War Era-style illustrations and text. I created these elements in the idealistic style of the period and culled words and statements that can be read on multiple levels. These components are screen-printed on the surface in combination with traditional paintings of meat. The result is a composite “painting” intended to raise questions about meat as an object of beauty, humor, and social commentary.
