This series of work combines multiple interests into what I hope are coherent, if not clear, images. Discarded school maps are often the setting for a re-visioning of each regions legends, myths, and customs. The subjects of the pictures are as anachronistic and confounding as the images used to describe them. As societies change, boundaries shift, creating a physical landscape that seems as foreign as the resulting cultural one.
I am interested in the prevailing illustration style of 1940s-60s American publications. The clear, "democratic" lines seem to embody the idealized lifestyles they depict. There is an innocent authority to the images that mirror the nation's status as an emerging super-power. I hope to parallel this cautious confidence in my work as I investigate defunct histories.
